The Ayurvedic View
In the ancient Indian system of Ayurveda, the heart (Hṛdaya) is more than just an efficient little pump that delivers blood to all of our tissues and organs – it is said to be a locus for human life energy as well as emotions, and vitality itself (Ojas). From the heart’s perspective, three doshas are crucial:
- Vata: circulation and heartbeat
- Pitta – deals with blood, filtering and metabolism, accessibility of vitamins in the body and heat.
- Kapha provides steadiness and nutrition
If these are disrupted, heart disease occurs.
Dosha as reflection of pattern in Heart Diseases
- Vata soothi: palpitations, arrhythmia, anxiety, High BP.
- Pitta aggravation: Heat in the chest, irritability, inflammation.
- Excess Kapha: Excess fat and mucous tissue –> over-weight, high cholesterol, slow circulation, blockages.
Heart-Healthy Diet in Ayurveda
For Vata-type conditions
- Hot, heavy, oily foods such as soups, stews and ghee.
- Stay away from cold, dry, and irregular food.
For Pitta-type conditions
- Cooling and soothing foods: sweet fruits, greens, coconut water.
- Ditch the spicy, fried foods and lay off the alcohol and excessive caffeine.
